The Danube Region faces growing climate-related disasters, including heatwaves, droughts, wildfires and heavy rainfall causing flash floods at local level.
A sponge city is designed to handle excess rainfall using techniques such as green spaces, green walls, bioswales, urban lakes, rain gardens and permeable pavements. Adding sewer and storage systems can also help address water scarcity.
The project analyses water-management practices in 12 pilot settlements, develops planning tools, and supports implementation through local action plans, feasibility studies and demonstrator investments.
