The WATERUN project was developed to create an innovative methodology that supports the implementation of urban runoff management plans based on the concept of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD).
This methodology provides preventive measures, mitigation solutions, and best management practices by adopting a holistic approach that covers the entire decision-making process, from source identification to strategic planning, for the control of diffuse water pollution in urban catchments.
As a result of the project, a comprehensive WATERUN Toolbox was developed for engineers, urban planners, drainage system managers, and water utility teams working on:
- reducing storm overflow discharges caused by heavy rainfall events;
- controlling urban water pollution;
- implementing nature-based solutions;
- improving urban drainage management and resilience.
The toolbox can also be used by regulatory authorities, environmental agencies, consultants, and researchers to review management plans, assess environmental risks, and support strategic decision-making processes.
Its primary objective is to help cities and water utilities transform regulatory and environmental requirements into practical, sustainable, and cost-effective solutions for urban water management.
Related initiatives that complement the project's objectives and outcomes include D4RUNOFF and StopUP.
