The D4RUNOFF project, available at d4runoff.eu, brought together an international partnership of experts and researchers from 13 leading universities, institutions, and companies across 5 countries.

The main objective of the project was to prevent and manage pollution generated by urban runoff through the design of hybrid nature-based solutions, grounded in robust data and supported by advanced monitoring methodologies.

Urban runoff and environmental impact

Urban runoff, which includes stormwater and snowmelt, represents a major pathway for transporting pollutants released in urban environments.

These flows significantly contribute to the degradation of receiving water bodies, posing risks to public health and damaging aquatic ecosystems. As a result, effective stormwater management has become a key component of sustainable urban infrastructure.

Nature-based solutions for stormwater management

Nature-based solutions, previously referred to as sustainable urban drainage systems or blue-green infrastructure, can effectively reduce both the volume and flow of runoff.

Examples include green roofs, constructed wetlands, grassed swales, and other systems that promote natural water retention, filtration, and infiltration processes.

D4RUNOFF project development directions

The D4RUNOFF project aimed to develop innovative methods and tools for better understanding and controlling pollution associated with urban runoff.

  • New methods for detecting pollutants originating from urban runoff;
  • Advanced sensors for identifying and monitoring emerging contaminants;
  • Monitoring endocrine-disrupting compounds, pharmaceuticals, and microplastics;
  • Assessing the real environmental impact of runoff-related pollution;
  • Supporting the design of hybrid nature-based solutions adapted to urban environments.

By combining scientific research, advanced monitoring, and solutions inspired by natural processes, D4RUNOFF contributes to the development of more resilient, cleaner cities better prepared to face climate change and urban pollution challenges.
